Welfare leeches, look out: North Carolina became the latest state to re-enact work requirements for able-bodied, childless adults between the ages of 18 to 49, according to the Asheville Citizen-Times.

The policy, instituted by North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory, will take effect Jan. 1, 2017. It will start in 23 of the state’s 100 counties, and will affect about half of the state’s 200,000 food stamp recipients.

Recipients must “find a job, enter a work training program or volunteer or their aid will be slashed for a three-year period,” the Citizen-Times reported.

“If jobs are available, we want to encourage work,” Sherry Bradsher, deputy secretary for North Carolina’s Department of Health and Human Services, told reporters. “People are healthier and feel better about themselves and have a greater amount of dignity when they are working.”

“Now that the national economy is getting better, this is reinstating a policy that has already existed,” she added.

Not only that, but it’s going to be a great deal harder to reverse it, too. Another piece of legislation, House Bill 318, “permanently bars the state from reversing the policy even in areas of high unemployment or during an unanticipated economic downturn.”

HB 318 passed overwhelmingly, 38 to 17 in the state Senate and 70 to 43 in the state House.

There is the predictable carping from liberals who claimed that this was squeezing people who can’t afford it. Here’s a question for you, though: If you are on food stamps and you are able-bodied and cannot find a job or enter a job training program, why should you be getting my tax dollars?

And this isn’t a small number of people on the benefits program, either. We saw how this affects half of those receiving the benefits in the state of North Carolina. If this is the case, how are we really going to pretend that this is about taking benefits away from people who can’t work.

Enough is enough. It’s time we saw more states take the stand that North Carolina has.
