If President Donald Trump wanted to give liberals an even bigger headache than the New England Patriots gave Atlanta Falcons fans, he certainly did his best in a Bill O’Reilly interview that aired on Super Bowl Sunday, in which Trump said he had “respect” for Russian leader Vladimir Putin and asked O’Reilly if “you think our country is so innocent.”

The response came after the Fox News host asked the president about his feelings about the long-time Russian president.

I do respect him,” Trump told O’Reilly.

“Do you?” an incredulous O’Reilly responded. “Why?”

“Well, I respect a lot of people, but that doesn’t mean I’ll get along with them. He’s a leader of his country. I say it’s better to get along with Russia than not. If Russia helps us in the fight against ISIS, which is a major fight, and Islamic terrorism all around the world, major fight, that’s a good thing.”

“But he’s a killer, though. Putin’s a killer,” O’Reilly said.

“There are a lot of killers,” Trump responded. “We have a lot of killers. Well, you think our country is so innocent?”

Video below. The discussion of Putin begins at about 2:00.

I can just see Rep. John Lewis having an angina attack in his office as he watched that clip, desperately reaching for his nitroglycerin pills.

Now, while what Trump is advocating may get a lot of Democrats upset, his realpolitik way of looking at Russia is certainly better than either of the two phases of Barack Obama’s presidency, in which he either dealt with Russia as if it were a non-issue or with the zealotry of the John Birch Society (but only after WikiLeaks).

As for the moral equivalency, I certainly wouldn’t argue that part couldn’t have been said better. As William F. Buckley once pointed out, “To say that the CIA and the KGB engage in similar practices is the equivalent of saying that the man who pushes an old lady into the path of a hurtling bus is not to be distinguished from the man who pushes an old lady out of the path of a hurtling bus: on the grounds that, after all, in both cases someone is pushing old ladies around.”

However, if it makes the Democrats go into conniptions, it can’t be all bad.
