President-elect Donald Trump has embarked on a “Thank You Tour” across America in the swing states that handed him his victory over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and his rallies have been amazing.
Trump’s latest rally was in Wisconsin on Tuesday night. Standing in front of several massive Christmas trees (and at a lectern that had the words “Merry Christmas” on it), Trump got the crowd roaring time and time again.
First, Trump said “Merry Christmas” to roars of approval, and then he started talking about House Speaker Paul Ryan, who is from Wisconsin.
“And you know, honestly, he’s like a fine wine. Every day goes by I get to appreciate his genius more and more. Now, if he ever goes against me I’m not going to say that. He’s a great guy and we have some amazing things in store,” he stated.
Trump ticked off the things they would be working on, like tax reform and Obamacare, and then the crowd starting shouting about the border wall.
“Oh, we’re going to work on the wall, Paul!” Trump said, looking directly at Ryan.
You can watch here:
Trump has reiterated many times his promise to build the wall since he has been elected, to the delight of his crowds. However, this public promise to Ryan served as more than a good sound bite.
It served as a warning shot to Ryan not to stonewall Trump’s wall (pun really not intended). Perhaps Trump wanted Ryan to see how popular the wall idea was, so Ryan would think twice before putting up a fight over it in Congress.
Trump will need Congress to approve funding for the wall. While we can expect there to be some debate over how much funding is needed, Congress needs to understand that the American people want that wall built, and they will hold Congress responsible if it doesn’t happen.
Ryan has promised to work with the Trump administration to enact real reform across the board. Hopefully he will keep the crowd’s reaction in mind when it comes time to fund the border wall.
