Don’t worry, America: The construction project to drain the swamp in Washington, D.C., is still scheduled to commence Jan. 20.
After one of Donald Trump’s top surrogates, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, said Wednesday that he did not believe the president-elect still intended to “drain the swamp” in Washington — in other words, go after the establishment and special interests — as he had claimed during the campaign, Gingrich received a strong rebuke from Trump via Twitter.
On Thursday, the former speaker made a public admission on Facebook that he misspoke and apologized for his statements.
The controversy began when Gingrich gave an interview to NPR’s “Morning Edition” and was asked about the Trump administration’s plans for swamp-voiding.
“I’m told he now just disclaims that. He now says it was cute, but he doesn’t want to use it anymore,” Gingrich said. “I’d written what I thought was a very cute tweet about “the alligators are complaining,” and somebody wrote back and said they were tired of hearing this stuff.”
“I’ve noticed on a couple of fronts, like people chanting ‘lock her up,’ that he’s in a different role now and maybe he feels that as president, as the next president of the United States, that he should be marginally more dignified than talking about alligators in swamps,” Gingrich continued.
“I think it vividly illustrates the problem, because all the people in this city who are the alligators are going to hate the swamp being drained,” the former House speaker explained. “But, you know, he is my leader and if he decides to drop the swamp and the alligator, I will drop the swamp and the alligator.”
Someone incorrectly stated that the phrase “DRAIN THE SWAMP” was no longer being used by me. Actually, we will always be trying to DTS.

It didn’t take long for Gingrich to go on social media and admit that he was wrong following an apparently phone conversation with the president-elect.
“I want to report that I made a big boo-boo,” Gingrich said. “I talked this morning with President-elect Donald Trump, and he reminded me he likes draining the swamp, I mischaracterized it the other day.”

So, just to make it clear: swamp-draining is still on the infrastructure agenda. Great news for everybody. And kudos to Gingrich for being able to admit when he was wrong.
