Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich appeared on Fox News’ “Sean Hannity Show” last night and defended President-elect Donald Trump’s phone call with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, saying the conversation sent a deliberate signal to Beijing.
Gingrich compared Trump’s conversation with Ing-wen to President Barack Obama’s visit to Cuba, noting the different message each incident sent the world.
“(Trump) accepted a phone call from the freely elected head of a democracy of 23 million people, and frankly, if it’s OK for President Obama to go down and hang out with the Castro dictatorship, it ought to be OK for Donald Trump to talk to a democracy,” the former speaker said.
“He’s also sending a very tough signal to Beijing,” he continued. “This ain’t the old order, we’re not gonna let you push us around. You don’t dictate to us.”
Gingrich said the phone call was setting the stage for very important negotiations.
The phone call also sent the message that the United States won’t be intimidated — a message Trump had repeated throughout his campaign.
You can watch Gingrich’s comments here:
Gingrich made an excellent point — and made Obama look like a fool in the process.
Democrats and the liberal media are showing their hypocrisy by criticizing Trump over this phone call while they fawned over Obama’s trip to Cuba — a trip that sent the world a more dangerous message than Trump’s conversation with the elected leader of democratic Taiwan ever could. Nevertheless, the left continues to act as if Trump were ready to start World War III.
The left will always find something wrong with just about everything Trump does, but as they do, they will only continue to embarrass themselves with what turn out to be hypocritical criticisms.
