Ever since the 1917 Bolshevik revolution in Russia that brought about the Soviet Union, original communist dictator Vladimir Lenin has been hailed as a hero to Marxists and reviled as a tyrant by those who support capitalism and democracy.
According to a 2016 piece by Wired, roughly 14,000 statues of Lenin were constructed by Soviet officials across the expanse of the communist empire. Most were found in Russia, but thousands more were erected in the Eastern European and Central Asian nations that made up the Soviet bloc.
However, after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, many of those statues began to be defaced or toppled entirely by those who had been finally freed from the oppressive communist regime, with a renewed surge to take down the rest of the statues across Europe in recent years as a show of defiance toward the perception of aggressive Russian expansion, particularly in Ukraine.
One such effort to take down a statue of Lenin, posted to YouTube in January 2016, and believed to have been filmed in Ukraine, resulted in the statue not only being cut in half, but actually beheaded in a freak occurrence that some have labeled “divine judgment” on the murderous leader who bears responsibility for the deaths of tens of millions of innocent people.
As the crane operator attempted to lift the heavy statue off of the pedestal upon which it had been placed, the rope suddenly slipped and became entangled around Lenin’s neck, popping off the head and sending it flying as the body of the heavy statue crashed to the ground.
All jokes aside, this is a rather fitting end for the communist dictator, and hopefully the same treatment will be purposefully delivered to any other statues of Lenin that remain in the former Soviet satellite states.
