Angry Driver Gets Nasty Revenge on DMV Pays With 300000 Pennies

Revenge is a dish best served with pennies — thousands upon thousands of pennies, to be exact.

This was no doubt what Virginia man Nick Stafford had in mind when he carted nearly 300,000 pennies to the Lebanon Department of Motor Vehicles Wednesday to pay off $2,987.45 in sales taxes.

But what was it that triggered his vengeance? Was it the ridiculously long lines, the over-stringent rules, the uncomfortable chairs or perhaps even the sales taxes themselves?

Speaking with the Bristol Herald Courier, Stafford explained that the ordeal began last September, when he attempted to call the Lebanon DMV but was routed to a call center in Richmond.

What followed was an arduous and expensive court battle in which he filed a number of Freedom of Information Act suits demanding to be given the direct phone number not only to the Lebanon office, but also to the locations in Abingdon, Clintwood, Gate City, Jonesville, Marion, Norton, Tazewell, Vansant and Wytheville as well.

He ultimately won, though it wound up costing him over $1,000 “to give the DMV his 2 cents,” as the Bristol Herald Courier cleverly put it.

“The phone numbers are irrelevant to me,” he later said of his suits. “I don’t need them. I told the judge, ‘I think I proved my point here.’ I think the backbone to our republic and our democracy is open government and transparency in government, and it shocks me that a lot of people don’t know the power of FOIA.”

What had irked Stafford was the DMV’s refusal to simply provide him with a direct-access phone number.

“If they were going to inconvenience me then I was going to inconvenience them,” he noted.

Making life inconvenient for the DMV did not come easy, however, as he reportedly had to hire people to help him unroll the pennies and five wheelbarrows to complete the delivery.

Was it worth it, though? Considering how most Americans feel about the Department of Motor Vehicles, probably — but we’ll let you answer that for yourself.
