Confidential U.S. and Mexican law enforcement sources have allegedly discovered that Jihadi terrorists in the Mexican state of Nuevo León have been collaborating with cartel members to carry out attacks on cities and ports of entry along the southern U.S. border.
These claims were revealed by the watchdog organization Judicial Watch in an exclusive report published Wednesday.
According to Judicial Watch, militant Islamic radicals arrived recently at Monterrey International Airport and were, according to cartel informants, “only waiting for the order and the times to carry out a simultaneous attack in the different ports of entry or cities of the United States of America.”
Moreover, Mexico’s major drug cartels have reportedly reached some sort of agreement with Islamic terrorists, according to an unnamed Mexican police administrator. As the militants arrive in Mexico, they are then tasked with training cartel members to also act as jihadis.
“One seasoned Mexican law enforcement official told Judicial Watch that a key cartel informant verified picking up various Middle Eastern individuals from ‘evil groups’ at the Monterrey Airport in the last few days alone,” the watchdog group reported. “The informant is extremely credible and has also worked for several U.S. government agencies.”
Adding to the danger was that, as The Daily Beast journalist Jeremy Kryt reported earlier this year, many of Mexico’s most ferocious cartels were “already deeply embedded inside the United States” and thus had the type of access and intelligence that could spell certain doom for American targets were Islamic radicals to get hold of them.
However, Kryt disputed the notion that Jihadis and cartel members were necessarily working together, claiming that the two “seem more like natural enemies.” He also alleged that there was no concrete evidence proving any sort of alliance between the two existed, as has long been maintained by Judicial Watch.
“I spent eight months out of the last year reporting up close with both law enforcement and the cartels in Mexico and, after much searching for just such a headline-grabbing, cartel-ISIS link, was unable to find so much as a prayer rug,” he wrote.
Were these claims by Judicial Watch’s sources therefore bogus? Nobody knows, largely because the watchdog group was unwilling to reveal its sources.
One thing was for certain, though — regardless of the truth of this particular claim, the threat of radical Islamic terrorism is one that President-elect Donald Trump will have to take seriously as he takes office.
