It was one of the most heartbreaking things you’ll ever see: a soldier’s casket, being removed from a plane after an American hero took his final trip home. And as it turns out, it wasn’t just his brothers in arms who were paying him respect.

According to KTRK-TV, a passenger named Lisa Williams’ reported that her flight into Raleigh-Durham Airport in North Carolina had been an uneventful one until it had landed. That’s when passengers were told they would need to wait so that someone could be let off of the plane.

It wasn’t just anyone who was being let off of the plane, though — it was the flag-draped casket of a fallen soldier. That’s when Williams started filming — and the cabin started sobbing.

There are no words. Simply watch:

This, ladies and gentlemen, is why we respect the flag and why we respect those who serve it.

For those who don’t, for those whose respect is merely in passing, put yourself in the situation of the people we’re watching through the eye of Lisa Williams’ camera.

Almost none of us, thank the Lord, will have to go out on a rainy tarmac and place our hand on the casket of our loved one who died serving this country. Almost none of us will know the agony of being a serviceman or servicewoman and having to carry the casket of a fallen comrade — maybe not for the first and maybe not for the last time.

Very few of us will also ever get to witness the scene — and for those of you who shed a tear during this video, I assure you there was a lot more crying on board that plane.

It is a heartbreaking thing to see, but it’s something that we need to remind ourselves of. We need to remind ourselves of the price of service — and how some pay the ultimate price.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of this fallen hero.
