After a video depicting an off-screen CNN producer making a joke about President-elect Donald Trump’s plane crashing went viral Friday, the network issued a statement apologizing for the producer’s depravity and revealing that she had been punished.

“An unfortunate and inappropriate remark was made by one of our producers off camera yesterday,” a CNN spokesperson told Politico. “We have apologized to the Trump transition team, and the producer has been disciplined.”

What remained unclear was what exactly the spokesperson meant by “disciplined.” Had she been fired from her position? Temporarily suspended? Some would argue that she deserved to be terminated given the context of her joke.

The video showed CNN correspondent Suzanne Malveaux standing by, waiting to report on Trump’s arrival in Indianapolis. It was toward the end that the unnamed producer began making quips about the hand signals she would make to indicate whether the plane had landed.

“So, he’s landing any minute,” the producer could be heard saying to Malveaux. “If I do this, it means he’s landed.”

A few seconds later, the producer added, “That means his plane’s crashed — no, I’m kidding.”

Not funny …

By Saturday morning, the original video had already acquired over a million views, as well as countless comments from frustrated Trump supporters who could not help note the lack of liberal outrage over what the producer said.

“If someone said this about (former Secretary of State) Hillary (Clinton) there would be a firestorm of liberal outrage,” one supporter, Bryan Doyle, wrote. “But since it’s about Trump, crickets…”

He was correct. Had someone said something similar about Clinton, columns would be popping up across the liberalsphere talking about the alleged epidemic of sexism and violence against women that persists across America.

But as of Saturday, there were no columns to be read at Salon, The Huffington Post, The Daily Beast and any other liberal rag about the producer’s joke. Surprise, surprise.

Granted, it was just a gaffe — a macabre joke not meant to be broadcast — but still, it would be nice if the media were to display at least a smidgen of consistency.
