The United Nations has a history of making poor decisions when it comes to protecting freedom and liberty around the world, and its official news service recently made the poor decision to chime in on the upcoming United States presidential election.

The United Nations News Centre issued a tweet on Thursday urging “8 million Americans abroad” to “stop (Donald) Trump,” according to Politico.

The tweet, which was quickly deleted, encouraged Americans living overseas to share a voter registration tool of an online activist organization, Avaaz, that argued “U.S. Citizens abroad could defeat Trump … if they voted.”

The web site’s homepage boasted information about how American expats could be the “October surprise that will end Trump,” and encouraged them to sign up for help registering to vote.

It also encouraged those who signed up to share the registration tool with their friends abroad.

“At a time when Trump is trying to divide us, we could help defeat him if we all share this page with EVERYONE. Let’s reach every US voter abroad,” the website read.

Within 20 minutes, the U.N.’s tweet was deleted without explanation, and Ari Gaitanis, chief of the organization’s News Services Section that oversees the Twitter account, said it was a mistake.

“That tweet did not originate from the UN News Centre and this was the reason for it being taken down,” Gaitanis told Politico. “We’re looking into its provenance.”

It wouldn’t be the first time the U.N. tried to poke its nose into the business of the United States, and after Trump has repeatedly criticized our government for giving too much money to the organization that frequently comes down on the wrong side of freedom, it’s no surprise that it would want to influence the election.
