A new law banning unlimited soda refills in French dining establishments went into effect Friday, in the latest example of how a liberal government attempts to control human behavior. It’s about as out of control as it gets.
The ban was part of a law passed in 2015 aimed at combating the obesity rate, which is 15 percent in France. Fast food restaurants — particularly foreign-owned chains — are likely to be particularly affected by the law, according to The New York Times.
Other examples of how the government has overreached have included banning vending machines from schools in 2004. In 2011, school cafeterias in France were limited to serving french fries once a week. In 2012, the country imposed a “soda tax.”
The new law targeted soft drinks and sports drinks that contain added sugar or sweeteners and would “limit, especially among the young, the risks of obesity, overweight and diabetes,” according to the BBC.
French Health Minister Marisol Touraine supported the law from the beginning, The Local reported.
“This habit is common in other countries and it is increasingly taking hold in France. I understand it can be attractive for young people who are offered unlimited sugary drinks, which contain an excessive amount of sugar or sweeteners,” she said in 2015.
Sadly, measures like this are becoming all to common — even in the U.S. Liberals try to tax sugary drinks and ban other foods in the name of health, but all they’re really doing is telling the rest of the world that they think they know what’s best for everyone else.
Liberals have never believed that individuals are capable of making the right choices for themselves, and they prove it with asinine laws like this. Laws like this ban on refills trample everyone’s freedom of choice, and they are a symptom of an overreaching government that must be stopped.
At the end of the day, health is, and should be, a personal choice.
