Trump Turns Down Parting Offer From Obama, Donated To Charity Instead

With only a couple weeks remaining of his presidency, President Barack Obama offered a parting gift to President-elect Trump– an outdoor playset for his grandchildren to use when visiting the White House.

Trump turned down the offer.

In a series of tweets, CBS News White House Correspondent Mark Knoller detailed the account.

“The playset was donated to a local organization serving those in need,” a White House official confirmed.

The Obamas selected the playset in 2009, surprising their two daughters after they returned from school.

The playground equipment included three swings, a slide, a green canvas-covered loft, a tire swing, a small climbing wall and a ship’s wheel. A small picnic table was also installed to the side, with small plates engraved with the names of all 44 presidents.

“It was a big hit,” White House usher Steve Rochon said at the time. “The kids screamed. They came down with Dad and Mom.”

At the time of purchase, the set was valued to be around $2,850.

Obama was frequently photographed passing the playset every time he walked to or from Marine One on the South Lawn.

Trump reportedly turned down the offer because his wife Melania and their son Barron will spend most of their time in New York to avoid any disruptions to the 10-year-old’s education.

Trump also has plans on not living full time at the White House and may commute to his tower in NYC.
