You’ve heard the liberal refrain — an impenetrable southern border is totally impossible, especially when it comes to building a wall. Furthermore, they said, President-elect Donald Trump would never even try to follow through on it. Well, if a Reuters report is true, the president-elect has already been preparing to do the impossible.
In what the news agency described as a “wide-ranging request for documents and analysis,” Donald Trump’s transition team has asked the Department of Homeland Security to formally assess how many assets the department has for “border wall and barrier construction.”
The requests stem from a meeting on Dec. 5 between officials from the Trump transition team and the DHS. During the meeting, several areas to increase border security were explored.
At the meeting, a memo claimed, U.S. Customs and Border Protection “identified more than 400 miles along the U.S.-Mexico border, and about the same distance along the U.S.-Canada border, where new fencing could be erected.”
Trump’s transition team also asked about Operation Phalanx. That’s a program that surveils the border from the air with 1,200 National Guard airmen. The program once employed up to 6,000 airmen during the George W. Bush administration, but has been significantly reduced during the Obama years.
“The transition team also asked for copies of every executive order and directive sent to immigration agents since (President Barack) Obama took office in 2009, according to the memo summarizing the meeting,” Reuters reported.
Another request had to do with the DACA program, part of Obama’s executive actions on illegal immigration that saved illegal immigrants from any deportation action if they had arrived in childhood. The program “collected information including participants’ addresses that could theoretically be used to locate and deport them if the policy is reversed.”
Since Trump reportedly planned to reverse DACA, the transition team asked for the identification of any records that had been changed.
“A Department of Homeland Security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the agency interpreted the request to mean the transition team wanted to make sure that federal workers were not tampering with information to protect DACA recipients and other migrants from deportation,” Reuters reported.
From the look of things, it definitely appears that the wall — once viewed as impossible by the left — seems more and more likely to happen. Will Trump be able to deliver on his biggest campaign promise? Stay tuned.
