While addressing Congress Tuesday night, President Donald Trump hit a home run for many reasons, but one of the most significant was when he said what he felt his responsibility as president was.
“Free nations are the best vehicle for expressing the will of the people — and America respects the right of all nations to chart their own path,” the president said.
“My job is not to represent the world,” he continued. “My job is to represent the United States of America.”
Take a look below:
Trump’s comments drew a standing ovation from Republicans, but unsurprisingly many Democrats chose to stay seated. These words probably made them uncomfortable because they think that the American president should, in fact, represent the world’s interests.
We can see evidence of this by simply looking at the past eight years under former President Barack Obama. Democrats will never admit it, but Obama and his globalist policies — along with former Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton and John Kerry — are at least partially responsible for the rise in nationalism that landed Trump in the White House.
Trump also told Congress that America must put its own citizens first, because that is the only way we can truly make America great again.
Trump recognized that a new kind of national pride is growing across the nation. This pride will make many progressives uneasy because many of them believe you cannot love America and still care about the world. Many of them will claim Trump’s message was just coded bigotry.
But it wasn’t. An unabashed love for one’s country and a desire to make it great and keep it safe do not qualify as bigotry. Thinking people understand that, and that’s why they elected Trump.
