Trump Puts John McCain on Blast After He Calls Marine Raid in Yemen a Failure

In a series of Twitter messages delivered after Arizona Sen. John McCain criticized President Donald Trump’s recent raid in Yemen, Trump said that McCain’s statement “emboldens the enemy” and that “he doesn’t know how to win anymore.”

According to ABC News, the Jan. 28 raid against Al Qaeda claimed the life of Navy SEAL William “Ryan” Owens. However, the raid did achieve its objectives, according to White House press secretary Sean Spicer, who called it a “huge success.”

“When you lose a $75 million airplane and, more importantly, an American life is lost … I don’t believe you can call it a success,” McCain, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, told NBC News of the Yemen raid. He added that “(b)ecause the mission failed did not in any way diminish their courage and willingness to help their fellow Americans who were held captive.”

The Arizona Republican elaborated on this in a Tuesday statement, which was obtained by BuzzFeed News.

“Every military operation has objectives. And while many of the objectives of the recent raid in Yemen were met, I would not describe any operation that results in the loss of American life as a success,” McCain’s statement said. “Going forward, I am confident that our military will act on lessons learned from this operation to strengthen our fight against our terrorist enemies.”

Really? So D-Day was a failure because American lives were lost? Something tells me McCain didn’t put a lot of thought into those statements before he opened his mouth to attack Trump.

This provoked a response from President Trump.

“Sen. McCain should not be talking about the success or failure of a mission to the media,” Trump said. “Only emboldens the enemy! He’s been losing so long he doesn’t know how to win anymore, just look at the mess our country is in – bogged down in conflict all over the place. Our hero Ryan died on a winning mission (according to General Mattis), not a ‘failure.’ Time for the U.S. to get smart and start winning again!”

Press secretary Spicer echoed similar sentiments (although nowhere near as strongly) during a Wednesday media briefing.

“Anybody who undermines the success of that raid owes an apology and (does) disservice to the life of Chief Owens,” Spicer said.
