During a White House event for a veterans group Thursday morning, President Trump made a huge stand for America’s veterans, saying that “We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them.”
According to WSET-TV, the president was honoring 54 wounded veterans at a ceremony that was part of the Wounded Warrior Project’s Soldier Ride.
The White House visit has been a tradition since 2008.
“You’ve risked all that you have, all that you possess to keep our people safe and our democracy secure, and we’re going to keep it going for a long time in your honor,” President Trump said in a speech. “You’ve earned our freedom with your sweat and your blood and your incredible sacrifice. We salute you. We salute your service.”
He was even more effusive during an interview with Fox News’ Pete Hegseth.
“We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them,” Trump told Hegseth.
“I’ve said we’re going to take care of them,” the president continued, touching on the issues with the VA healthcare system. “They have not been taken care of properly, and it was a big thing. David (Shulkin), who you know is the new secretary (of Veterans Affairs), is going to do a fantastic job.”
“He has a group of people with him and the enthusiasm is incredible,” the president added. “You see it already the results already have been incredible.”
“And he wants to fire a few more people at the VA if they’re not conducting themselves well,” Hegseth added.
“He wants to get good people, I will tell you,” Trump said. “He wants to get good people more so than firing, and it’s time because the VA has not done so well.”
