After watching a campus with 58,000 students that was paralyzed by violence, President-elect Donald Trump sent a message to all of those affected by an incident that left one person dead and several others hospitalized.
On Monday, a driver crashed a vehicle into a group of pedestrians, then slashed at students with a knife. The attacker was shot dead by an Ohio State police officer. At least nine people were hospitalized.
Police later announced the driver was a Somali refugee and that the crash was intentional.
“Watching the news unfold at Ohio State University. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the students and administration,” Trump posted on his Facebook page.
“Excellent job by the Ohio State University Emergency Management Team (OSU_EMFP) in immediately notifying students & faculty via social media with the message: ‘Buckeye Alert: Active Shooter on campus. Run Hide Fight. Watts Hall. 19th and College,’” he wrote.
“THANK YOU to all FIRST RESPONDERS who reacted immediately and eliminated the threat on campus,” Trump added.
Many went to Trump’s Facebook page to send their responses to a president-elect who was speaking directly to the people on issues other than politics.
“Thank u mr president for being the first in my existence as a man of power to get on social media explaining the situation. I wish this happened all the time,” commented Melissa Hudson.
Others noted the contrast between Trump and President Barack Obama.
“Thank you for showing your support and care and concern for the people of Ohio state. You won’t see Obama talking about this,” posted Shane Marcum.
“Thank you President Elect Trump for making such quick supportive responses to these situations..unlike the current President,” commented Linda Jean.
One college student included his thanks.
“As a student at OSU who was on campus while this was happening, thank you so much for making this post. Thoughts and prayers with my fellow Buckeyes today,” posted Josh Cardosi.
