Speaking with reporters Thursday from the White House briefing room, Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney explained why President Donald Trump’s administration had no intention of frittering away money on either researching or combating so-called man-made climate change, according to a White House transcript.
“Regarding the question as to climate change,” he said, referencing complaints by reporters that Trump’s newly released budget included significant cuts to climate change research, “I think the president was fairly straightforward — we’re not spending money on that anymore; we consider that to be a waste of your money to go out and do that.”
Notice how he said “your money,” not “our money” or even just “a waste of money.”
As public servants, government officials work not on behalf of themselves but rather on behalf of the American people. Generally due to elitist arrogance, officials often forget this.
In the case of the Trump administration, they clearly haven’t.

The budget director was right in his insinuation that researching climate change was an effective waste of taxpayer funds.
As noted by Cato Institute economist Richard W. Rahn in an op-ed published in The Washington Times last year, though “trillions of hard-earned taxpayer dollars have been spent to combat global warming over the last three decades,” global temperatures have not declined by even an iota from where they would have otherwise been.
Moreover, the draconian environmental regulations that have sprung up as a result of this “research” were costing the U.S. economy at least $1.75 trillion annually by 2011, only three years into former President Barack Obama’s tenure, according to Forbes contributor Larry Bell.
“Consider that current policies are costing hundreds of billions we can’t afford along with millions of lost employment opportunities; all based extensively on a bogus, politically manufactured climate crisis devoid of any supportable scientific evidence,” he wrote then. “This is occurring at a time when our gross national deficit following a ceiling rise exceeds the size of our GDP, and the U.S. credit rating has been devalued for the first time in history.”
Look, if certain entities within the private marketplace want to research climate change, then be our guest. Just please stop expecting us — the American people — to pay your way involuntarily.
