President-elect Donald Trump has often railed against the Environmental Protection Agency’s job-killing agenda, and it looks like that wasn’t just talk. As his pick to head the environmental agency, he’s decided to pick one of the agency’s most ardent critics.
According to The New York Times, Trump has chosen Republican Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt, who has been outspoken in his condemnation of the government bureau.
Pruitt has also been outspoken when it comes to the so-called consensus on global warming, which he criticized in a National Review piece earlier this year.
“Healthy debate is the lifeblood of American democracy, and global warming has inspired one of the major policy debates of our time,” Pruitt wrote. “That debate is far from settled. Scientists continue to disagree about the degree and extent of global warming and its connection to the actions of mankind. That debate should be encouraged — in classrooms, public forums, and the halls of Congress. It should not be silenced with threats of prosecution.
“Dissent is not a crime,” he added.
According to Fox News, Pruitt was also a strong opponent of the EPA’s Waters of the United States regulatory package, an order so broad it could have conceivably put drainage ditches under federal control.
“Respect for private property rights have allowed our nation to thrive, but with the recently finalized rule, farmers, ranchers, developers, industry and individual property owners will now be subject to the unpredictable, unsound and often byzantine regulatory regime of the EPA,” Pruitt said.
Needless to say, Pruitt’s appointment didn’t take well with the left. Liberal policy think-tank Public Citizen said that Pruitt’s nomination was a “terrible choice,” adding, “Pruitt is cozy with the oil and gas industry and treats the EPA like an enemy.”
Meanwhile, those creating jobs praised Trump’s choice.
“Scott Pruitt is a businessman and public servant and understands the impact regulation and legislation have in the business world,” Jeffrey McDougall, chairman of the Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association, told Fox News. “His appointment will put rational and reasonable regulation at the forefront.”
If you were one of those conservatives who were worried that visits by Al Gore and Leonardo DiCaprio to Trump Tower meant that Trump was going over to the greens, think again. It seems that he’s still willing to antagonize the left and stick with conservative values, especially when it comes to insane overregulation in the name of environmentalism.
