For years, nearly every world leader, media pundit and everyday citizen has referred to the Islamic State group as “ISIS,” save for one stubborn politician: Former President Barack Hussein Obama. He seemed forever intent on identifying the terror group as “ISIL” instead.
Even worse, he forced his entire administration to follow suit. Not anymore, though. As reported by CNN, President Donald Trump’s Pentagon has issued a directive ordering officials to henceforth refer to the Islamic State group as “ISIS” versus “ISIL.” It appears common sense has finally prevailed.
Why, though, had Obama been so hellbent on identifying the terror group as “ISIL”? To understand this, one must first become familiar with the true meanings of the acronyms.
As explained by The Associated Press three years ago, “ISIL” stands for the “Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant,” whereas “ISIS” stands for the “Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.”
The “Levant” “refers to a huge region stretching from southern Turkey through Syria to Egypt (also including Lebanon, Israel, the Palestinian territories and Jordan),” according to the AP.
There were two primary theories surrounding Obama’s insistence on referring to the terror group as “ISIL.” One postulated that he wanted to deflect from his massive failures in Syria. The other theory, revealed by Fox News host Harris Faulkner three years ago, said that Obama wanted to essentially make the terror group appear bigger than it really was in a way that seemed almost complimentary.
“Levant is a bigger territory,” she noted during an episode of “Outnumbered,” according to Mediaite. “That’s why they want to embrace that name and it includes many, many more countries than just Syria.”
Either way, he and his administration were the only ones who believed “ISIL” was the correct term to use, as Trump himself noted in a tweet posted two years ago.
Wish Obama would say ISIS, like almost everyone else, rather than ISIL.

Even the liberal mainstream media has, for the most part, stuck to referring to the terror group as “ISIS.” (The Associated Press, however, uses neither acronym as a matter of style, referring to the organization as “the Islamic State group,” as does the Conservative Tribune.)
In fact, a rather comical exchange occurred on “Meet the Press” three years ago when, during an interview with NBC News host Chuck Todd, Obama kept referring to the terror group as “ISIL” while Todd referred to it as “ISIS.”
The full interview can be seen below:
Clearly, even Obama-sycophant Chuck Todd disagreed with the president. Think about that …
