We generally aren’t fans of expanding D.C. bureaucracy. This time, though? We don’t mind.

In a Monday news conference, President Donald Trump announced that he would be setting up a new White House Office of American Innovation, placing his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, at the head of it, according to The Wall Street Journal.

“America has long led the world in innovation and technological advancement. American ingenuity has launched industries, created jobs, and improved quality of life at home and abroad,” the White House said in a statement.

“To ensure that America remains the global innovation leader, I hereby direct the senior adviser to the president to head an office in the White House dedicated to American innovation. This office will bring together the best ideas from government, the private sector, and other thought leaders to ensure that America is ready to solve today’s most intractable problems, and is positioned to meet tomorrow’s challenges and opportunities. The office will focus on implementing policies and scaling proven private-sector models to spur job creation and innovation.”

According to the statement, the Office of American Innovation “will make recommendations to the president on policies and plans that improve government operations and services, improve the quality of life for Americans now and in the future, and spur job creation.” It will also “focus on innovation, coordinate implementation of any resulting plans, and create reports for the president setting forth policy recommendations.”

White House spokeswoman Hope Hicks said that this was part of the president bringing his private sector experience into his job.

“He recognized where the government has struggled with certain projects and he was someone in the private sector who was able to come in and bring the resources and creativity needed and ultimately execute in an efficient, cost-effective, way,” Hicks said, according to TheBlaze.

“In some respects, this is an extension of some of the highlights of the president’s career.”

In other words, what made Trump a success could mean success in the White House too.

While we’re not big advocates of government expansion, this seems to be targeted expansion that’s a very good thing for our country. After all, consider the number of jobs that are created through the tech industry every year. If President Trump wants to actually go after new jobs, innovation is the key — and this office is clearly the place to start.
