One of President Donald Trump’s most well-received campaign promises was his vow to build a “big, beautiful” wall along the U.S.-Mexico border to help drastically curb illegal immigration.
Now it appears that the wall is finally going to start being built soon — albeit in small chunks. As part of the White House’s 2017 budget supplement for border security and defense, the Trump administration is requesting just shy of $1 billion for 62 miles of border wall/fencing, CNN reported.
This money would fund roughly 48 miles of new wall, plus maintenance and upgrades on existing sections of fencing along the border.
“The money will fund 14 miles of new border wall in San Diego, 28 miles of new levee wall barriers and six miles of new border wall in the Rio Grande Valley region and 14 miles of replacement fencing in San Diego,” CNN reported.
Trump often indicated on the campaign trail, and after he won the 2016 presidential election, that the wall would be built in stages, not all at once.
Business Insider reported that Trump’s budget proposal also includes requests for money to train more border patrol agents and ICE agents.
The Hill noted that these requests are “supplementals” to the 2017 budget that Congress has yet to approve. Senate Democrats led by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have warned that they will force the government into a shutdown if Trump’s requests are included in the budget.
This budget request shows that Trump is very serious about getting the wall built, and he is eager to start as soon as possible. While some details of the wall, such as whether it will be made of concrete or fencing, still need to be worked out, it’s good to see Trump moving forward on his campaign promise.
