During a speech Tuesday night in Fayetteville, North Carolina, President-elect Donald Trump laid out his plans for the Middle East and the Islamic State group, and they’re exactly what we’d expect them to be.
Trump pledged to scale back on interventions in the Middle East and focus heavily on defeating the Islamic State group.
“We will stop racing to topple foreign regimes that we know nothing about, that we shouldn’t be involved with,” the president-elect said, The U.K. Guardian reported. “Instead our focus must be on defeating terrorism and destroying ISIS, and we will.”
Trump vowed to rebuild a strong military, which he said had been stretched too thin.
“We don’t want to have a depleted military because we’re all over the place fighting in areas that we shouldn’t be fighting in. It’s not going to be depleted any longer,” Trump added, according to Reuters.
Trump also said that he would modernize military equipment.
You can see some of his comments here:
“All men and women in uniform will have the supplies, support, equipment, training, service, medical care and resources they need to get the job done incredibly well and perfectly,” he said.
Trump also said that instead of investing in wars, he would invest in improving America’s aging roads, bridges and airports.
Trump also took a moment to announce his choice for secretary of defense, Gen. James Mattis, a man whom he described as the right person for the job.
During his campaign, Trump criticized President Barack Obama for depleting our military while simultaneously giving the Islamic State group an opportunity to grow and thrive.
It looks like those days are, thankfully, coming to an end, and it also looks like Trump is going to bring American exceptionalism back to our military.
Trump’s plans shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to anyone who’s been keeping up with him. He continues to do what he said he was going to while on the campaign trail.
