Trump Aide Calls For Primary Against House Freedom Caucus Member

The battle between the White House and the House Freedom Caucus grew more intense Saturday when President Donald Trump’s director of social media declared political war on one prominent House conservative.

Dan Scavino Jr. attacked Rep Justin Amash, R-Mich., via Twitter.

Amash has been among the more vocal Freedom Caucus members matching Trump volley for volley ever since Trump singled out the Freedom Caucus for a scolding in the wake of the failure to pass the House GOP’s Obamacare overhaul.

On Saturday, he fired back at Scavino by saying Trump had now been subsumed into the establishment he came to overthrow.

“Trump admin & Establishment have merged into ‪#Trumpstablishment. Same old agenda: Attack conservatives, libertarians & independent thinkers,” Amash tweeted.

The chasm opening between Trump and conservative Republicans has worried some commentators.

“Now I don’t know who’s telling the White House to focus their anger on the Freedom Caucus, but I do think it’s misplaced,” Trump supporter and Fox News host Sean Hannity said this week. “Because the Freedom Caucus … they want to make a deal, and they want the win for the president and the country.”

Rush Limbaugh also disagreed with Trump’s tactic.

“Look, folks, calling them out like this, I know it’s Trump’s technique, I know it’s Trump’s method,” Limbaugh said on his radio program Friday. “But there’s a better way of doing this. These guys are not the enemy. The Democrats are the enemy.”

Caucus members themselves have said challenges do not concern them.

“If a primary challenger would serve this country better than me, then I’m certainly willing to entertain that,” said Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz. “I think we can get along with the president. I think we’re the best friends the president has in this situation.”
