Top Dem Refuses to Filibuster Trumps SCOTUS Pick

Even before President Donald Trump announced that he was nominating Neil Gorsuch to be his nominee for the Supreme Court, Senate Democrats were already promising that they would oppose whomever Trump picked.

However, one Democrat, West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, broke from his party’s insanity and stated that he wouldn’t take part in any filibuster to block Trump’s nominee, The Weekly Standard reported.

“I’m not going to filibuster anybody,” Manchin stated on Tuesday, before Trump had announced his pick.

It’s nice to see a Democrat having a little backbone and standing up to his party’s leadership. Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley has vowed that he will filibuster Trump’s nomination, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has indicated he is on board with that.

Republicans only have 52 seats in the Senate, so in addition to Manchin, seven other Democrats would need to join all Republicans to reach the 60-vote threshold necessary to end any filibuster.

Politico reported that after Trump announced his nominee, Manchin, whose state went for Trump in November and is considered to be vulnerable in the upcoming 2018 elections, appeared willing to give Gorsuch a fair hearing.

“Let’s give the man a chance. Talk to him. My goodness,” Manchin said Wednesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “Don’t shut it down before we even get started. And two wrongs don’t make a right.”

Manchin also stated that he isn’t in favor of the so-called “nuclear option,” which would do away with the filibuster for Supreme Court nominees and require only a simply majority of 51 votes to advance Gorsuch’s nomination.

It was unclear if Manchin truly wants to work across the aisle or was adopting this posture only because he was worried about his re-election chances in 2018.

Democrats have done everything they can so far to slow the confirmations of Trump’s cabinet nominees, and there is no reason to believe that they won’t do the same thing for his Supreme Court nominee.

Hopefully, there are more senators like Manchin out there who are willing to work across the aisle to give Gorsuch a chance.
