In response to students in his state petitioning their respective universities to institute sanctuary policies to protect illegal-immigrant students, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced Thursday via Twitter that any campus caught doing as such would pay a steep price.
“Texas will not tolerate sanctuary campuses or cities,” he wrote. “I will cut funding for any state campus if it establishes sanctuary status.”
According to The Dallas Morning News, no state universities in Texas had formally declared themselves sanctuary campuses
However, The Daily Caller noted that schools in other states, including the University of California and California State University, “have promised that their police forces won’t cooperate with any federal efforts to enforce immigration law,” which one could argue was equivalent to a formal declaration.

It was unclear whether Abbott could actually cut funding to such schools. Speaking with The Huffington Post, state Rep. Trey Maritnez-Fisher, a Democrat, noted that for the governor to cut funding to state universities, he would need the state legislature’s assistance.
“Whatever money is going to these schools is worked through by the House, Senate and the governor’s office,” he said. “If the governor is going to follow through with his threat to veto funding to universities, he will have only done so with the acquiescence of the House and the Senate, and I doubt that would ever happen.”
Unless, of course, President-elect Donald Trump were to pursue similar measures on the federal stage, which he could conceivably do given his previous threats regarding sanctuary cities.
For the time being, it appeared Abbott was stuck having to negotiate deals with the state legislature to cut funding to those schools that felt it prudent to protect the interests of illegal immigrants, should any present themselves.
In the meantime, the Texas governor has reportedly signaled his intention to sign a law banning sanctuary cities.
He also said that he had already issued an order cutting funding to such cities.

If he were to find a way to do the same thing to sanctuary campuses, many of Texas’ citizens would likely appreciate it quite a lot.
