The FBI has discovered State Department emails related to Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s tenure as secretary of state on disgraced ex-Congressman Anthony Weiner’s laptop.
Weiner, the estranged husband of top Clinton aide Huma Abedin, has been under investigation for allegedly sexting a 15-year-old girl, not his first excursion into cyber-creepiness.
An unidentified U.S. official told CBS News that the emails are not duplicates of any emails found on Clinton’s private server. This is significant news because Clinton repeatedly told authorities she had handed over all of her pertinent emails months ago.
Now it seems as though we have evidence that Clinton has lied — again.
It was not immediately known if any of the emails were significant to the FBI’s investigation. The agency also did not say how many relevant emails had been discovered.
Last Friday, FBI Director James Comey told Congress that the agency had reopened its investigation into Clinton and was taking steps to review the new emails found on Weiner’s laptop. On Monday the agency obtained a warrant for the emails.
Abedin claimed she had no knowledge of any of her emails being on Weiner’s computer.
The investigation was one of five involving the former secretary of state and the Clinton Foundation. The very fact that Clinton is involved in any investigation by the FBI should be enough to disqualify her from seeking the presidency, much less winning it.
CBS confirmed that there were disagreements among agents at the FBI and members of the Department of Justice regarding a separate investigation into the Clinton Foundation. The current status of that inquiry remained unclear, but no known charges have been filed in relation to the foundation.
Whether we ever hear what these emails contained or not, they are a smoking gun that the FBI could use to bring charges against the former secretary and her aide for lying — a likelihood that is surely keeping the Clinton camp up at night.
