It is a simple fact of human nature that when people get in an excited or emotional state they can say things they didn’t intend to say. It appeared that is what happened recently with a soccer player from Ghana who won an award and seemed to reveal his marital infidelity by thanking both his wife and girlfriend while accepting the trophy.
Mohammed Anas of the South African Free State Stars won the man-of-the-match award recently after he scored both goals for his team in a hard-fought 2-2 draw with the Ajax Cape Town team on Friday, but it was his post-award interview slip-of-the-tongue about possible cheating that attracted more attention than his stellar play on the pitch.
“Firstly I appreciate my fans,” he said, according to the U.K. Telegraph. “(And) my wife and my girlfriend.”
“I’m so sorry, my wife!” he quickly added after realizing his error. “I love you so much from my heart. Thanks for supporting me, there is more to come.”
According to the U.K. Daily Mirror, the happily married Anas has claimed the whole thing was one big misunderstanding, that he has not been cheating on his wife, and that the “girlfriend” he thanked for her support was actually his young daughter.
“I’m famous now. People around the world know me,” he said in attempting to explain away his gaffe. “My family knows that I call my daughter my girlfriend. That’s what I was talking about. I don’t have a girlfriend.”
As for his wife of seven years, Anas believed she understood what he had meant and wasn’t worried about her being upset with him, stating, “I love her so much. She’s given me two beautiful children. She is fine. She knows what kind of man I am so I am not worried.”

This is pretty funny, regardless of whether one accepts his excuse.
As to whether his wife really understood what he meant and he really has nothing to worry about at home … that is pretty much between him and his wife now.
