Just days after the heinous attack at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Interntional Airport in Florida, reports have surfaced that the accused shooter had converted to Islam, even chosing an Islamic name years before joining the United States Army.
According to Judicial Watch, Esteban Santiago downloaded radical Islamic terrorist propaganda and recorded Islamic religious music online. He also called himself by the Islamic name Aashiq Hammad.
Santiago is an Army veteran who reportedly suffered from mental instability following a tour in Iraq.
It appears that only one mainstream media outlet, ABC News, even mentioned what it called the Santiago’s “jihadist identity,” but of course it buried that fact in a story about New York being his initial target. However, ABC noted that investigators had recovered Santiago’s computer from a pawn shop, and the FBI was examining the device to determine whether or not he created a “jihadist identity for himself using the name Aashiq Hammad.”
At least they reported that much. The rest of the mainstream media has all but ignored even the potential of a connection with radical Islam with this attack.
According to public records uncovered in the days following the attack, Santiago may indeed have had strong ties to radical Islam and may have been willing to be a conduit for violence in the name of the religion. Some reports state that he recorded three Islamic religious songs, including the Muslim declaration of faith, known as the Shahada.
Also, it seems that he posted a thread about downloading propaganda videos from Islamic terrorists on a weapons and explosives forum. This week, prominent Fort Lauderdale businessman Jim Morlock blasted county and federal officials for covering up that “Aashiq Hammad, not Esteban Santiago, attacked our city and county.”
He specifically targeted U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson in his letter.
“Since when does a U.S. Senator, not law enforcement, be the one to so quickly release this terrorist’s Hispanic name but nothing about his more relevant Islamic background? Obama must have told Sen. Nelson to keep this from looking like a Muslim Terrorist attack during the last 12 days of his watch. Bad for his legacy.”
Morlock added that, presumably for the Obama administration, it was “better to portray this atrocity as white Hispanic Alaskan mental Iraq war vet gun violence.”
This is seriously disturbing. Though it does seem that the shooter had some very serious mental issues, it is the duty of the media to tell the whole story, even when it doesn’t fit their narrative.
