A retired Italian archbishop close to Pope Benedict XVI claimed during an interview this week that the former pope resigned in 2013 due to “tremendous pressure” from former U.S. President Barack Obama.
“It is no coincidence that in America, even on the basis of what has been published by Wikileaks, some Catholic groups have asked President Trump to open a commission of inquiry to investigate whether the administration of Barack Obama exerted pressure on Benedict,” Archbishop Emeritus Luigi Negri said in an interview with Rimini 2.0, as translated by LifeSiteNews.
“It remains shrouded in mystery for now, but I am sure that those responsible will be found out,” he added.
Negri, who retired in February, was referring to a letter written by a group of American Catholics to President Donald Trump two months ago requesting that his administration investigate whether the Obama administration “interfered inappropriately into the affairs of the Catholic Church.”
“Specifically, we have reason to believe that a Vatican “regime change” was engineered by the Obama administration,” they wrote.
During his resignation speech four years ago, Pope Benedict lay the blame for his extraordinary withdrawal from office — the first such papal resignation in 600 years — on his deteriorating “strength of mind and body” and “incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted” to him. But many sought for other reasons.
Not everyone believed Obama had been behind Benedicts’ stepping down.
Some suspected that Benedict’s radical peers — namely Cardinal Godfried Danneels, who confessed two years ago to having been part of a radical “mafia” reformist group opposed to the pope, according to the National Catholic Register — were its true engineers.
Either way, nothing about Pope Benedict XVI’s sudden retirement in 2013 seemed normal. Nor did it seem inconsequential that his successor wound up being a political “progressive” whose whose agenda aligned perfectly with that of both former U.S. President Obama and Cardinal Godfried Danneels.
