Republican Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton called upon the Obama administration to put an end to transferring any more Guantanamo Bay detainees to foreign countries.
On Monday, Cotton released a statement saying that Obama should listen to the will of the people and stop releasing prisoners, which puts the nation at risk.
“The inmates remaining at Guantanamo are the worst of the worst and need to remain where they are so they cannot return to the battlefield and attack us once again,” the statement said, according to The Hill.
The Pentagon announced Sunday it had transferred detainee Shawqi Awad Balzuhair to Cape Verde over the weekend, which left only 59 prisoners behind. Balzuhair was also deemed a high risk and “likely to pose a threat” to the U.S., its interests and allies, reported The Hill.
Cotton objected to the transfer and accused Obama of being worried more about his legacy than national security.
“President Obama is spending his last days in office making America less safe by rushing to fulfill one final campaign promise and release hardened terrorists from Guantanamo Bay,” he said.
While the transfer is certainly dangerous, it shouldn’t be surprising. Obama has always been worried about his agenda more than anything else, and his attempt to release as many detainees as possible before Donald Trump enters the White House is just more proof that he is putting his own interests ahead of the safety of Americans.
Cotton is right to be worried about what Obama will do in the days he has remaining in the White House. There is still plenty of time to do his worst and fulfill his vow to close Guantanamo Bay.
