Amid all of the late-night excitement and surprise of Election Day, there were reports that Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton called President-elect Donald Trump to concede the race shortly before his victory speech.
Trump’s incoming chief of staff Reince Priebus spoke of the moment during a recent appearance on “Fox News Sunday” and seemed to indicate that a deal had been reached between the two candidates prior to that concession call, a deal that he now said seems to be off, according to Newsmax.
The deal essentially worked out how the loser would call and concede the race to the winner within 15 minutes of The Associated Press making the final call necessary to place the winner above the required 270 electoral votes.
Though that is precisely what occurred in the early hours following Election Day, Priebus has questioned whether Clinton’s campaign team was living up to its end of the bargain, citing its involvement in the recount efforts spurred by Green Party candidate Jill Stein.
According to Breitbart, Priebus specifically named Clinton lawyer Marc Elias as playing a role in the possible reneging on the concession deal by participating in the recount efforts in Wisconsin, as well as potentially Michigan and Pennsylvania.
As for the AP’s role in the deal, it has essentially washed its hands of the whole affair.
Lauren Easton, director of media relations for the AP, stated that the AP only “calls races when it is clear that one candidate has prevailed over the other. We have no knowledge of what the candidates do with that information until there is a public claim of victory or a concession.”
You can watch Priebus’ interview with Fox News host Chris Wallace here:
It remained to be seen just what may come of this potentially broken deal, but if it turns out to be true that Clinton’s team has reneged on their agreement about conceding the race, it would not be inconceivable for Trump to go ahead and renege on any other side deals he may have reached with the Clintons as well, such as refraining from prosecuting her to the fullest extent of the law.
