Mass killer Charles Manson is out of prison.
However, the 82-year-old inmate remains under guard at a Bakersfield, Calif., hospital, where TMZ reported he was taken Tuesday.
The Los Angeles Times, citing sources it did not identify, reported that Manson was “seriously ill.” The Times said the sources could not provide any further information.
Manson is currently serving nine life sentences at Corcoran State Prison for a series of murders committed by him and his “Manson Family” followers in 1969.
Officials with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation declined to comment on reports about Manson’s hospitalization.
“We do not disclose inmate movements for safety and security reasons,” said Terry Thornton, a department spokeswoman.
“It does happen that sometimes inmates are treated at local hospitals,” another spokeswoman, Krissi Khokhobashvili, said Tuesday.
Manson, now 82, has had what the Times reported as “hundreds” of rules violations during his incarceration.
Manson, who has been in prison since 1971, has been denied parole 12 times. His next parole hearing is not scheduled until 2027.
The 1969 murders for which Manson was jailed included the slaying of actress Sharon Tate, who was more than eight months pregnant at the time she was killed.
Some of Manson’s followers remain jailed.
Patricia Krenwinkel, 69, who was at the Tate killings, is facing a hearing that could result in her release. She has been behind bars longer than any other female inmate in California.
Leslie Van Houten, 67, was denied parole last year by Gov. Jerry Brown even though she was recommended for release. Van Houten was convicted in the 1969 Manson Family slayings of Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary.
