While much of the attention is focused on Hawaii every year on Dec. 7 in remembrance of the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor that brought the U.S. into World War II, there are many smaller commemoration services of a similar nature at war memorials all across the country.
That would include the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C., and though the gathering on Wednesday was relatively small, a reporter discovered a rather high-profile guest had slipped into the ceremony with little fanfare, according to the Independent Journal Review.
Reporter Benny Johnson happened to be going by the memorial when he noticed an abundance of Secret Service and police vehicles, yet he had not heard of any guests requiring such a motorcade being on the list of those who would attend the service that morning.
It turned out that the guest was none other than Vice President-elect Mike Pence.
Though he was initially astonished that there had been no notice of his attendance, as well as the fact that the memorial hadn’t been placed on lockdown as typically happens when high-profile guests arrive, one of Pence’s top aides revealedthat Pence had deliberately kept his planned appearance quiet in order not to cause a “distraction” that would take away from the moment for the veterans present.
“He wanted his presence to be a gesture of respect to the veterans in attendance,” the source explained. “If the event was placed on the vice president-elect’s official schedule, Secret Service would have had to lock down the entire area, subjecting the veterans in attendance, some in wheelchairs, to metal detectors and other invasive security procedures.”
According to KVOA, Pence joined Republican Arizona Sen. John McCain to take part in the wreath-laying portion of the ceremony.

This shows what a truly humble and respectful man Mike Pence really is. Other politicians and dignitaries generally have no qualms about the disruptions they cause with the massive motorcades, security procedures and contingents of aides and hangers-on who follow them to public appearances.
But Pence choose to keep his appearance quiet out of respect for the men and women who sacrificed their lives and liberty to fight for freedom some 75 years ago and truly deserve to be the center of attention on what has become a hallowed day in America.
