Two horrific incidents have reportedly shaken European cities today, with both having the markings of terror attacks.
In Spain, a gunman allegedly opened fire on employees and shoppers at a supermarket in As Lagoas, Ourense, while shouting “Allahu akbar,” according to the U.K. Express.
Meanwhile, the Reinbeker Weg School in Hamburg, Germany, had to be evacuated after an apparent gas attack left dozens of students struggling to breathe, the Express reported in a separate article.
The Spanish supermarket employees said the gunman, who had not been named as of late Wednesday, fired at least six shots during the attack, and police later found gasoline and gunpowder in his pockets.
Fortunately no shoppers have been reported injured or killed as a result of the attack, but the supermarket had been cordoned off by law enforcement investigating the scene.
The gunman was taken to a local police station, but refused to speak to officers and reportedly showed no sign of remorse about the incident. He was believed to have psychological problems, according to the U.K. Daily Mail.
In Germany, officials believed perpetrators used pepper spray to attack students in the Reinbeker Weg School’s gymnasium, where more than 30 students reported having trouble breathing and nine were hospitalized.
Some students also reported vision problems following the attack, and several were given immediate oxygen treatment in the back of ambulances that arrived on the scene.
While there has been no confirmation that the German attack was a terror attack fueled by radical Islam, the Spanish gunman’s usage of “Allahu akbar” is a telltale sign of being connected to — or at least inspired by — the violent arm of the religion.
More details about both of these incidents will likely be developing as the day continues, but as of now, we can only hope and pray for the best for the victims and their families.
