During the transition period, President Donald Trump railed against the F-35 fighter jet that was being built by Lockheed-Martin, claiming that it cost too much and that the deal needed to be renegotiated.
Trump kept his word and on Friday it was announced that the Trump administration and Lockheed-Martin had struck a new deal that would save hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer money, Fox News reported.
The tentative deal was for 90 F-35 planes. One variant of the fighter jet — the F-35A — would be built at only $95 million. That may sound like a lot, but it is actually the lowest price for any F-35 fighter to date, and is estimated to save over $700 million.
Business Insider noted that Lockheed-Martin announced that Trump’s “personal involvement” in the negotiations had helped lower the price significantly.
“President Trump’s personal involvement in the F-35 program accelerated the negotiations and sharpened our focus on driving down the price,” a statement released by the company explained. “The agreement was reached in a matter of weeks and represents significant savings over previous contracts.”
It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you threaten to cut off a company’s multi-billion dollar contract with the government.
The Pentagon has been working with Lockheed-Martin to lower the cost of the F-35 program for years, but it is unclear how much success they have actually had, CNN reported.
What the Pentagon had failed to do for years, Trump managed to do in a couple of weeks. Now, that’s real leadership.
Trump promised to drain the swamp of Washington, and from what we’ve seen so far he is keeping that promise. He isn’t going to let companies overcharge for everything they possibly can anymore.
Trump isn’t afraid to challenges the status quo in ways that his predecessors never would. This is the dawn of a new era of leadership in America, and so far, we are liking what we’ve seen.
