Now that Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona, has sadly gone down to electoral defeat, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, Sheriff David Clarke is the leading contender for the title of most awesome lawman in America.
However, new reports say he might be about to leave, too — although for something a lot bigger than the role he’s currently in.
According to the U.K. Daily Mail, the outspoken lawman met with President-elect Donald Trump in Trump Tower on Monday. It wasn’t just a courtesy call, either. Clarke was apparently being considered as a nominee to run the Department of Homeland Security.
Trump also met with Bush-era homeland security official Fran Townsend and planned to meet with House Homeland Security Chairman Mike McCaul of Texas on Tuesday.
According to The New York Times, others under consideration were Rudy Giuliani, Kansas secretary of state and immigration hawk Kris Kobach, retired four-star Gen. John F. Kelly and the aforementioned Sheriff Arpaio.
WITI-TV reported that Clarke has said he would serve in Trump’s administration if he were asked to.
Clarke, whose trademark cowboy hat and imposing presence have endeared him to conservatives and infuriated liberals, has been known for his outspoken manner on a number of issues, particularly the Black Lives Matter movement and its associated protests.
Sheriff Clarke had called the loose confederation a “domestic hate group” and had said that its take on police brutality was highly exaggerated.
“We ended that back in the ’60s,” Clarke said in an appearance on Fox News. “You look at the data and the research, and there’s a new Harvard study out that shows that there is no racism in the hearts of police officers. They go about their daily duty, if you will, to keep communities safe.”
Clarke also spoke at the Republican National Convention on behalf of Trump this summer, back when things looked less than rosy for the eventual president-elect.
We know how much Trump values loyalty. Now the sheriff’s loyalty might be about to pay off.
