Former California Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger might return to the political arena.

Politico reported the celebrity-turned-governor might consider a run in 2018 as a U.S. senator, possibly as an independent.

It could be a good time for him to take a stab at the seat as Democrat Sen. Dianne Feinstein would be up for re-election, not to mention 85 years old. While she has not yet firmly committed to running again, indications have been close to unanimous that she will.

If the Governator happened to win the seat, the conditions “would give Arnold the stage to jam Trump for the next 16 months,” according to a GOP strategist who spoke to Politico under the condition of anonymity.

It should be noted the Los Angeles Times reported that a source close to Schwarzenegger said the rumor was not true, but Schwarzenegger spokesman Daniel Ketchell did not rule out the possibility.

“Right now Gov. Schwarzenegger’s focus is on using his platform to bring some sensibility and coherency to Washington by fighting for redistricting reform, like we did in California,” Ketchell told Politico in an email Thursday. “We are keeping all of our options open as far as how we can accomplish that.”

Schwarzenegger served as governor of California between 2003 and 2010. As a senator, he could take issue with President Donald Trump on at least one key issue — climate change.

Schwarzenegger has been in the news recently over how he ended up leaving his gig at “The Apprentice.” He maintained that he had quit the show, while Trump claimed he had been fired due to poor ratings.

There’s no love lost between the two men. Before the presidential election, Schwarzenegger announced that he would cast his vote for Ohio Gov. John Kasich, even after he landed the job with “The Apprentice.”

As a senator, Schwarzenegger would definitely shake things up in Washington, even more than they already are. And even if he wants to head to Washington to duke it out with the president, we’d still likely support him. Almost anyone would be better than Feinkenstein.
