It appears that a certain well-respected broadcaster is making a big change in the new year.
The addition of Van Susteren, with 14 years at Fox and eight years at CNN under her belt, would be a badly needed shot in the arm for MSNBC.
Leaving Fox in September after contract renewal negotiations collapsed — she was pulling down a reported $12 million per year — Van Susteren faced entering a network where she would likely be the highest paid broadcaster. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, in their current top salary spot, reportedly makes $7 million per year.
Van Susteren brings tremendous weight to the table but would likely take a modest pay cut to get back in the game. It was unclear that MSNBC would shell out what she was used to earning at Fox, as that would be such a huge disparity over their current talent.
Another matter is whether Van Susteren would mesh well with MSNBC’s progressive opinion lineup of Chris Matthews, Chris Hayes, Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell. She has previously defended President-elect Donald Trump’s comments about Muslims and his appearance on Saturday Night Live.
In other words: The door of journalistic opinion swings only one way, and she may be too Trump-friendly.
Having said on social media that Fox News “didn’t feel like home” any longer, Van Susteren is likely looking for a place where she is not only appreciated but feels part of a cohesive team. MSNBC seems like an odd place for her to look
Townhall reported that the former criminal defense and trial lawyer was in talks to take over the 6:00 p.m. time slot at the liberal network, where she would compete against Brett Baier’s “Special Report” on Fox. Not exactly prime time, but very close.
The Daily Caller reported that Van Sustern followers have been begging to see their favorite on national news again. It appears they just may get their New Year’s wish — but they’ll have to change the channel to do it.
