Repo men have one of the toughest jobs in the world. Most encounters they face are not pleasant. But one Illinois repo man might be able change that reputation with what he did for an elderly couple.
Jim Ford felt horrible after he repossessed Stanford and Patty Kipping’s car in Red Bud. In fact, he felt so bad about it that he raised enough money not only to get it back for them but also to repair it and give them some extra money for other bills and necessities.
Ford, co-owner of Illini Recovery Inc., said he might be getting soft in his old age, but he just couldn’t get the Kippings out of his head after he took their car.
“When I got home that night, I said to myself, ‘They are a real nice elderly couple. I gotta do something. I can’t just take their car,’” Ford told the Belleville News-Democrat.
He had met with the couple before and even tried to negotiate a deal with the bank for the couple to keep the car, but he couldn’t.
So he decided to do it his way.
He set up a “GoFundMe” account and raised more than $3,500 in one night, which was enough to pay off what the Kippings owed on their car. He had money left to change the oil, top off the radiator and fix the headlights. He even had enough money to give the couple $1,000 cash.
On Monday, Ford returned the car. As he pulled the car back into the Kippings’ driveway, neighbors cheered him, the Fort Worth Star Telegram reported.
“It was a miracle come true. We didn’t know what we were going to do,” Patty Kipping said.
“I got up this morning and I looked up at the sun and I said, ‘I hope we get our car back.’ It’s just unbelievable,” Stanford Kipping added.
“It’s just like hitting the lottery,” Stanford Kipping told KTVI. “I’m just so happy, I can’t believe it.”
