Not content simply pardoning drug dealers, which was bad enough, President Barack Obama has signaled his intention to release at least 18 more terror-minded detainees from Guantanamo Bay.
“The Obama administration notified Congress it intends to send the detainees, nearly a third of the remaining 59 held at the U.S. naval base in Cuba, to at least four countries, including Italy, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, before President-elect Donald Trump is sworn in on Jan. 20,” Reuters reported last week.
There was just one problem, according to House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Ed Royce: Nearly a third of the 693 detainees already released from Gitmo were believed to have returned to terrorism, due in large part to the administration’s repeated decision to transfer detainees “to countries it knew lacked the intent and capability” to keep them in line, Royce wrote in The Wall Street Journal.
Not shockingly, save to the fools who work for Obama, the results of the administration’s incompetence have been devastating.
“At a March hearing, the administration’s special envoys for Guantanamo Bay closure admitted for the first time that as many as 12 former Gitmo detainees have returned to the terrorist battlefield and killed Americans,” Royce said.
Moreover, an additional 196 former detainees were suspected of having returned to terrorism, though no specific attacks could be traced to them as of yet.
By releasing even more Gitmo prisoners, the president was therefore knowingly endangering the lives of Americans both here and abroad — and all just to preserve his legacy.
“The politics of fear has led Congress to prevent any detainees from being transferred to prisons in the United States,” he told U.S. troops earlier this month in Florida, as noted by CNN. “Until Congress changes course, it will be judged harshly by history, and I will continue to do all that I can to remove this blot on our national honor.”
What he probably meant was that he felt as if keeping Gitmo open would make him look bad to future historians. Therefore he hoped to rectify this by releasing as many detainees as possible.
The ironic twist was that history likely will indeed look negatively upon Obama, but not because he failed to close Guantanamo Bay. It will look upon him negatively because, in his ego-driven mission to make himself look good, he wound up endangering the lives of the very people he swore to protect.
