In an entirely unsurprising move given the tumultuous nature of the 2016 election, demands for a recount of the vote in three crucial battleground states have begun.
What was surprising was that the call for a recount did not emanate from the losing campaign of Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton, but rather, from Green Party nominee Jill Stein, according to The Hill.
On Wednesday, Stein launched a website to raise the necessary funds to undertake a recount in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, three states where President-elect Donald Trump won by thin margins.
“The Stein/Baraka Green Party Campaign is launching an effort to ensure the integrity of our elections,” the site read. “With your help, (we) are raising money to demand recounts in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania– three states where the data suggests a significant need to verify machine-counted vote totals.”
“This effort to ensure election integrity is in your hands! We need to raise over $2 million by this Friday, 4pm central. In true grassroots fashion, we’re turning to you, the people, and not big-money corporate donors to make this happen,” the plea continued.
As of late Wednesday afternoon, the fundraising campaign had raised less than 10 percent of the $2.5 million requested.
According to the New York Post, liberal activists began raising alarms this week over purported discrepancies in Clinton’s vote count when totals from electronic voting machines were compared with the more traditional paper ballots and optical scanners, suggesting that hacking or some other form of manipulation may have been responsible.
However, the remnants of the Clinton campaign have not yet commented on the allegations from the activists or the demand for a recount from Stein, even though they would likely benefit from such efforts, perhaps even changing the ultimate outcome of the election, given the close margins.
It remained to be seen at this time what will come of this effort, but if they intend to make something happen, they better do it fast, as the time for challenging the election results is rapidly running out.
