We are 100 percent for religious freedom, every time. However, like every other freedom that Americans enjoy, there are rules. Number one, don’t break the law. Number two, your rights end where everyone else’s begin. Number three, see numbers one and two.
Kain Blackwing, a 47-year-old polygamist, rapist, pedophile and registered sex offender in the Salt Lake City suburb of West Jordan, Utah, has a long time in a prison cell to ponder these concepts.
Already in prison for sexually abusing a young girl, he was charged this week with three counts of solicitation for aggravated murder, conspiracy to commit aggravated murder and murder stemming from a bizarre attack two years ago, according to KSL-TV.
In 2015 Blackwing, already a convicted sex offender, was in jail facing trial for sexual abusing a 14-year-old girl in 2014. Speaking in code during jail visits, he and his three wives decided to kill the girl and her family, believing that would solve his problem because no one would be able to testify against him.
Kain sent two “sister wives” to the girl’s home dressed in “ninja clothing” including black masks and black gloves, according to KSL. They broke in, armed with a stun gun, knife, Saran wrap, matches, screwdriver, syringes, an arm tourniquet and formalin — a liquid form of formaldehyde.
Their plan was to suffocate the girl with the Saran wrap and kill the mother and her fiance by injecting the formalin.
These amateurs weren’t counting on a hero in the house. The mother’s fiance fought back, grabbing his sword from the mantle and overpowering the women. He saved the family from certain death, according to Fox News.
“She came at me with a stun gun, and I instinctively blocked it with my arm, and I hit her in the head, then proceeded to jump on top of her. I grabbed my sword on the mantle, unsheathed it and told her to sit down, that if she moved, she would lose body parts,” he said.
The two women, aged 19 and 22, were convicted of aggravated burglary, assault and retaliation against a witness or a victim. One got a year’s probation, the other got a 15-year sentence, according to KSL.
Blackwing himself was eventually convicted of sexually abusing the girl who was the target of the home-invasion attack.
While in custody, he was slapped with more charges of rape, forcible sodomy and forcible sexual abuse. The victim in that case? One of the “sister wives” in the attempted murder, who was 17 when Blackwing entered a physical relationship with her, according to KSL. That case was still pending, with the next court hearing scheduled for Tuesday.
As regions go, the Salt Lake City area is fairly plagued with pedophilia. The national state average for registered Sex Offenders is 15.36 per 10,000 residents. In the Salt Lake City area, the figure is 52.88 per 10,000 residents, according to Homefacts.
And due to Utah’s long history of a polygamist tradition coupled with TV exposure of polygamist families, the state has often turned a blind eye to a practice that usually involves taking “sister wives” at a young age.
Although polygamy is illegal in Utah, it is sometimes considered an “open secret.” Former Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, himself a Mormon, campaigned on a policy of leaving polygamists alone unless other crimes are being committed, and authorities generally do not prosecute polygamists as long as they keep a relatively low profile, according to The Chicago Tribune.
Polygamy isn’t religious freedom. It’s an ideology masquerading as religion. Sound familiar?
