Plenty of dumb criminals make headlines for their stupidity, but recently a group of thieves proved how clever they were after getting away with about $12,500 of designer clothing at a department store in Worthing, England.

Apparently thieves pretended to be mannequins at a Beales department store and waited until the store closed for the night before raiding the shelves. Then they had hours to “shop” at their leisure before making their escape, the U.K. Daily Mail reported.

An assistant, who did not wish to be identified, said it seemed as though the thieves copied an idea from the movie “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York,” in which the criminal antagonists Harry and Marv hid among mannequins at a toy store that was locked up for the night.

Police were “baffled” as to how the thieves got into the store and how they did not set off alarms, which supposedly has a sophisticated alarm system, according to the Daily Mail.

Alarms were triggered only as the robbers, who are still on the run, exited the store through a fire escape with thousands of dollars’ worth of designer clothes.

The assistant said it was a “very well-orchestrated crime” in which the thieves must have dressed in clothing that was identical to that of the mannequins and hid among them.

“They must have stood there with the mannequins not daring to move a muscle — imagine if they wanted to sneeze or had an itch they couldn’t scratch!” the assistant said. “It showed incredible nerve — the store is equipped from top to bottom with sensor alarms and cameras.”

Maybe it’s time for Beales to invest in better security alarms.

“Officers are continuing to investigate. Anyone who saw anything or has any information is asked to contact police,” a spokeswoman for Sussex Police told the U.K. Metro.

While it’s easy to snicker at criminals successfully stealing a scene from a comedy, it’s also a reminder that we should always be on the lookout for strange or suspicious behavior.
