An anonymous person decided to pay off all the layaway bills at a Walmart in Everett, Pennsylvania, last week in a stunning act of kindness that the individual has undertaken for three years now, a Walmart spokeswoman told CNBC.

Store manager Ryan Kennedy received a phone call last week from “Santa B,” who wanted to pay off all the layaway bills at the store — a grand total of $46,265.59, according to CNN.

“It was complete disbelief,” Kennedy told CNN about the kindness. “It was definitely a great gesture. I was completely shocked.”

Another individual dropped off the check for Santa B on Wednesday and the next step was for the store to contact all 194 customers to let them know that they could pick up their layaway purchases because they were paid in full.

“Some individuals were just brought to tears when they were notified about it,” Kennedy said.

“Well, my daughter played the message before I got there,” layaway account holder Christa Morton told CNN affiliate WJAC-TV.

“I asked if anyone called. She said, ‘You’re going to want to hear the message for yourself, so I said, ‘Am I going to be upset or mad?’ and she said, ‘It’s going to make you cry.’ So I walked upstairs and it was Walmart saying that our Christmas layaway can be picked up and that it was completely paid for,” Morton said.

Kennedy noted that he had heard of this happening in larger towns, but didn’t expect it in Everett — a town in Bedford County with a population of around 1,800.

“I would just be curious as to what made them choose us, and let them know how grateful we are for the gesture, and how much it meant to the customers that we have been able to serve,” Kennedy said.

Lewis Nancy Smith posted about the kind gesture on Facebook: “I have heard of this happening in larger areas, but nothing exciting happens in our small town. This time it did.”

What a kind thing to do. Many people purchase gifts and other items on layaway because that’s the only way they can even begin to afford to give their children and families gifts for Christmas. Santa B’s act of kindness surely meant a lot to these people and is a beautiful reminder of how important it is to help one another when we can.
