On Saturday evening, Vice President Mike Pence spoke at the 132nd annual Gridiron Dinner, an event where politicians and the media poke fun at each other (and themselves).
The dinner featured a number of good-natured jokes — which was a welcome break after two months of nothing but hostility — but Pence absolutely blew the evening away with his joke about the Oscars, the U.K. Daily Mail reported.
“We haven’t seen that many shocked Hollywood liberals since Nov. 8,” Pence said, comparing the Best Pictures screw-up at the Oscars to President Donald Trump’s unexpected general election win.
That was a perfect line, and it reminded everyone in the room, in a good-natured way, that Trump was swept to victory in November by a wave of people sick of the status quo. That is something Democrats and the media need to keep in mind.
Pence also used the dinner to stress that the media need to do a better job of reporting the facts of the situation and not trying to sensationalize stories, Politico reported.
“These days, and I say this with the deepest respect, it seems like in this short news cycle in which we live that too often stories will make page one and drive news with, with just too little respect to the people who are affected or involved,” Pence stated.
NPR reported that Trump was not at the event, though several members of his staff, including press secretary Sean Spicer, were in attendance and participated in the ribbing of Democrats and Republicans alike.
While the Trump administration and the media have a very tense relationship, it’s nice to see the two sides playing together (at least somewhat) for one night.
This event should remind all of us that we are all on the same side — we are on America’s side. The media need to remember that and stop trying to spin everything to their own advantage.
