Pro-life conservatives around America have been anxiously watching President Donald Trump, hoping for a sign that he will fight against abortion in America like he promised on the campaign trail.
Several op-eds about abortion have been published since Trump was elected, including one by John Piper, published on Desiring God, that went viral in two days.
The article had 175,000 shares at that point, which is incredible. It covers 11 points on abortion, a few of which are extremely powerful.
“It is illegal to take the life of the unborn if the mother wants the baby, but it is legal to take the life of the unborn if she doesn’t,” wrote Piper, explaining that many states in America treat the killing of an unborn baby as a crime.
The article also noted how abortionists themselves recognize that they are killing children — yet they seem to think that it is still the right of women to have that done.
Piper also explained that the limited capacities of a fetus do not “deprive it of personhood.” Being small, not being able to think on your own (yet), relying on your mother for life and being in the womb are all situations that should not disqualify someone from being human.
For at least a few of those cases, there are comparable examples in the real world. Is a human adult relying on a respirator and a feeding tube for life really so different from an infant in the womb?
Piper pointed out how when unborn children are operated on, they are treated as children. However if the mother doesn’t want the children and opts for an abortion, all of a sudden the unborn children aren’t even people anymore — at least in the minds of liberals.
Piper also noted how the genetic makeup of every human being is unique, even when the child is still in the womb, and after eight weeks all the organs are present in the fetus.
Perhaps Piper’s most powerful argument was the simplest: “We’ve all seen the photographs” of children in the womb.
‘The right of the unborn not to be killed and the right of a woman not to be pregnant may be at odds. But they are not equal rights. Staying alive is more precious and more basic than not being pregnant. We know what we are doing when we kill a child,” Piper concluded, discussing how in the case of abortion, the “higher value” right should also be respected when two rights are in conflict with each other.
Trump has already sent a positive message to the pro-life community in America by freezing foreign aid to foreign health care providers involved in abortion. Hopefully he will be able to continue along that line of progress and curb Planned Parenthood’s abortion practices.
If Trump can improve the lives of all Americans, and improve services for children and mothers, he can help stamp out the justification for abortions — and that would be a wonderful thing. We also hope he will appoint Supreme Court justices and federal judges who will stand up for the rights of the unborn.
