Miss Universe beauty pageant host Steve Harvey surprised Miss Kenya Sunday night with a question about President Donald Trump.
Harvey, who has met with Trump to discuss inner city issues, asked Mary Esther Were what excited and concerned her about the president.
He asked, “Arguably no U.S. president has had a more active 10 days in office. What are you most excited about and what concerns you when it comes to the Presidency of Donald Trump?”
Were, 27, was clearly taken aback by the question, but liberals were more taken aback by her answer.
Obviously, she wasn’t expecting a question about U.S. politics, but she did well and didn’t take the bait to trash Trump.
She answered by saying that Trump may not have been the choice of many people living in the U.S. because citing the division among voters but once he took office, he was able to unify the nation.
Watch her response below:
Trump hasn’t exactly unified the nation yet, but he’s doing what he said he would do if the voters put him in the White House.
The pageant officials might have been trying to catch this contestant off guard with a question about Trump, no doubt attempting to trick her into saying something negative about him. (Harvey was a known supporter of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign last year, even to the point of rigging an interview with her that was choreographed from top to bottom.)
However, their plan backfired. Were had a positive and hopeful response to the question.
Her answer reportedly left many of her fans bewildered, and many wondered why she was asked a question about American politics to begin with, but her answer showed that she wan’t going to allow herself to be tricked into bad-mouthing Trump. There’s plenty of that going around anyway.
Were did not win the competition, however. Miss France, Iris Mittenaere, walked away with the title. And yes, Harvey did award the crown to the right contestant this time.
