At the Golden Globes in January, actress Meryl Streep scoldingly reminded Trump voters that unless they shaped up and decided to get with liberal Hollywood’s program, all they’d have left is “football and mixed martial arts.” Americans, decidedly unimpressed, proceeded to preorder the next UFC match on pay-per-view, then donned their Giants caps and went about their business.
However, the speech went over relatively well in liberal Hollywood — so well, in fact, that one anonymous Oscar voter said that it was the only thing responsible for her nomination at this year’s Academy Awards.
Streep, for those of you who don’t follow these sorts of things, is nominated for Best Actress for her role in the movie “Florence Foster Jenkins.” Rotten Tomatoes described her role in the film as a “wealthy New York heiress (who) attempts to become an opera singer despite her horrible singing voice.”
That’s actually a pretty apt metaphor for her endeavors in the field of political analysis, although I don’t think that’s what bagged her the nomination.
In a piece in The Hollywood Reporter, one anonymous Oscar voter said that Streep’s performance was so awful, her Best Actress nomination could only be explained as a liberal reward for her Golden Globes speech.
“I thought Meryl … played it like a clown — she’s cute and adorable, but this woman didn’t matter to me in the end — but people are gaga over Meryl, and I think she solidified her nomination when she gave that speech at the Golden Globes,” the voter said. “I don’t think she would have gotten nominated without it.
It would hardly be a surprise if Hollywood had decided to honor Streep just because of her stance against Donald Trump. After all, we’ve heard over and over again how this year’s Oscars are going to be the most political yet.
And, you know what? That couldn’t be better news for Donald Trump. No matter what the Hollywood left says, conservatives can be safe in the knowledge most Americans will vehemently disagree.
Especially if it’s coming from Meryl Streep.
